Beards at the PMA

I had the opportunity to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art recently and I, of course, couldn’t help but notice all of the beards. I took as many pictures as I could before being reprimanded by the security guards.  (They really are kind of mean.)

I’ve got one word for you: Versatility

A beard can mean may things.  A beard can also say many things.  I spent a lot of time thinking about how beards define certain people and I would like to share my findings.

There are some characters that you just can’t imagine without a beard.

King Leonidas, AKA Gerard Butler, is a pretty good example, mainly because he would not be nearly as Bad-ass without his beard.  THIS IS SPARTA!

Albus Dumbledore and Gandalf, and really any old wizard for that matter, are contextualized by their beards.  It shows great wisdom and patience as it gets older and bigger.  I guess you could say Hagrid belongs alongside Dumbledore, but somehow his character is not really wizard-esque

Billy Mays, with his beard and backwards-pointing thumb, was a late, great icon in the world of TV commercials and will live on, eternally branded into the world of info-mercials.  Eat your heart out, Shamwow guy!

Joaquin Pheonix is an interesting character.  Famous for his roles in movies like “Gladiator” and “Signs,” he was always a clean shaven actor.  However, in his documentary called “I’m Still Here” his audience watches his beard grow as he tries to break into the rap world.  His beard symbolizes his character’s change in artistic mediums, as well as his downward spiral.  The rap game is a tough game to play.

Since I cannot (or will not) proceed to post my opinions of every bearded character in today’s pop culture, I will leave you with a pretty cool picture series of actors that you wouldn’t think as “bearded,” per se.

Sincerely,
The Bearded Blogger

Let’s Begin

Gentlemen, and those ladies interested in facial hair, welcome to The Bearded Blog!  This is a place to learn about techniques, tips, news, events, and general bearded goodness.  Whether you are looking to start a beard, turn that peach fuzz into burly whiskers, or just maintain your St. Nick bristles, the bearded blog is the place to learn how to do it.

My name is Ryan Roskilly, AKA the Bearded Blogger, and I have taken it upon myself to gather as much useful information on the subject of beards as I possibly can.  This blog is not solely concerned with how to grow an epic beard, it also covers the why, where, when, and who.  We will explore why a man may choose to grow one, or why he may choose a certain style.  I will show you where to showcase your whiskers and where to discuss them.  I will also research when contests and festivals are coming into town so you can see how you stack up.  Additionally, we’ll be taking a look at some  bearded figures we’ve come to love as well as some you may not be familiar with.  All in all, let this blog be your guide into the world of beards.

Yours Truly,
The Bearded Blogger
